How to Update Your License: Alabama

Written by MoveEasy

Changing your address after a move can be a real pain. At MoveEasy we do our best to minimize the hassle of updating your license. The information you will need to update your license in Alabama goes as follows:

In-State

To update your license when moving from one Alabama address to another is a relatively easy task. All you will need to do is notify the DPS Driver License Division within 30 days by mail.

Send your full-name, Alabama driver’s license/ID card number, and your new address to:

Driver License Division
P.O. Box 1471
Montgomery, Alabama 36104

This will only give the DPS an updated record. You are not required to have a new license, but if you want one that shows off your new address, then you will need to fill out an application for a duplicate card. You will need to provide proof of your identity and the duplicate card fee. This can be done in-person at any Alabama DPS office.

Out-of-State

Welcome to Alabama! Moving from another state to Alabama has a few additional hurdles, but we’ve done our best to lay them out clearly.

To transfer your out-of-state license you will need to visit an Alabama DPS office within 30 days and complete the following:

  • Provide 2 proofs of identity (1 needs to be a photo I.D.)
  • Provide your Social Security number
  • Take a vision exam
  • Pay license fee and receive temporary license until your permanent license arrives by mail within 30 days
